Musicians Frederick Sugarman and Theodore Joly delight at the Warden's Recital

Frederick Sugarman and Theodore Joly performed pieces from Chopin, Vaughn Williams and Schubert at Hilary Term's Warden's Recital.

Sugarman, a pianist and composer who is reading music at New College, chose a selection of pieces from Chopin. Joly, who is also reading music at New College, performed works from four different composers.

The musicians

Frederick Sugarman

Freddie Sugarman is a pianist and composer from Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire, currently reading music at New College, Oxford. He holds a special passion for jazz and electro-acoustic composition, being the keys player in the jazz and funk band Losing Ben. He began learning piano at age 12 and was classically trained as a pianist, being a fan of the likes of Chopin and Scriabin. Since then, he has developed more in jazz and improvisation being inspired by Vijay Iyer and the German fusion band Triorität.

Theodore Joly

Theo Joly is a First Year Music student at New College, Oxford, focused mainly on composition, ethnomusicology and performance. Primarily a baritone and pianist, Theo was previously a music scholar at Peter Symonds College, Winchester, studying the Hampshire Specialist Music Course. Theo's musical highlights were winning the Vocal Prize at the Young Musician Festival, Winchester, as well as singing the bass solo in Howell's 'A Spotless Rose' in Winchester Cathedral. He hopes to carry on his musical journey in Oxford.
