David Limebeer

David took a University Chair in Engineering Science in 2009. His previous posts include a research fellowship at the University of Cambridge (1980-84). In 1984 he moved to the Department of Electrical Engineering, Imperial College London as a lecturer. In 1989 he was promoted to Reader in Control Engineering and to Professor in 1993. He was head of the Control Group between 1995 and 1999, and was Head of the Department between 1999 and 2009. He was chairman of the Imperial College Engineering Faculty Research Committee between 2002 and 2005. He was elected Fellow of the IEEE in 1992, Fellow of the IEE in 1994, Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 1997 and Fellow of the City and Guilds Institute in 2002. He is a keen collector of Georgian furniture.


David teaches a variety of engineering subjects including control theory, circuit theory, multi-body mechanics and power systems.

Research Interests

These include a range of applied and theoretical problems in engineering dynamics including robust control theory, vehicle dynamics, process control, tokamak fusion reactors and aeroelasticity. His current interests include the design and dynamics of high-performance motorcycles, the control of problems in aeroelasticity and applied optimal control. He is also interested in a variety of nonholonomic problems in classical multibody mechanics. Recent consultancy activities have been in product liability litigation, patent disputes in optical recording systems, High-speed packing machines and Guide weapon systems.
